good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it is saturday, march 31st. windy and wet conditions expected this morning. let's check in with rosemary. and it was so nice yesterday afternoon had a hard time convincing people the rain was coming! >> yes, we saw mix of sun and clouds, it was mild out there. the winds have really picked up in some areas, and you can see the north bay now dealing with some light to moderate rain. south easterly to 21 miles per hour, sfo, 17 miles per hour san jose, and from 20 to 30 miles per hour in the coast and inland. so it is going to be a bit of a treacherous ride if you have an early morning drive. we have light rain from clear lake into santa rosa. highway 101 is getting wet. poet luma, san rafael, sonoma reporting light rain there. you can see still dry in areas right around san francisco, getting into richmond, maybe a

few sprinkles there. but again most of us right at this point dealing with just some gusty conditions, oakland reporting 28 miles per hour with the gusts a little stronger than that. this rain is shifting south and over the next hour or two we will all be wet. we'll talk about what we expect from the storm and we have a few advisories to talk about as well. three winners will share the record $640 million mega- millions jackpot. we're sorry to say the winning tickets were sold in maryland, kansas and illinois, not here. lottery officials say each winning ticket is expected to be worth more $213 million, before taxes. let's look at those winning numbers for you. but there are some winning tickets in the bay area that could net the holders a nice sum of money. allie rasmus is at a fremont store with that story. >> reporter: hi, claudine. no jackpot winners here in california, or the bay area,

but 29 people in the state did come close, five people in the bay area who got five of the six correct mega-million numbers on their tickets. the only ones they missed was the mega-ball. those people will be getting $130,000 apiece. and one of them bought their ticket here at the fast and easy mart on ardenwood boulevard in free month. the owner got the news last night and says the winner of that ticket hasn't come to collect his prize yet, but he gets to keep 1% of that 130,000 dollar ticket. it's not a windfall, just $1300, but he says i'll take it. >> i was so happy! yep. >> what does it mean for your business. >> it's good for the business. >> and he says the real boom for his business is in the days leading up to the record- breaking mega-millions drawing. he told 20,000 lottery tickets at this store and gets 1% of those ticket sales too.

at other convenience stores and gas stations, thousands of people lined up, some for hours, to have a shot at this winning ticket. and there are five people in the bay area who came very close to the mega-millions jackpot. they got five of the six numbers corrected. here's a map of the five stores that sold those $130,000 tickets. one in san rafael, one in san jose, one in san francisco, and this here in free month some if you haven't checked your ticket yet, you might want top. the owner here in fremont says he plans or is expecting someone very happy lotto winner to come into his doors late they're morning. allie rasmus, channel 2 news. antioch police investigating a deadly shooting at a bar. officers say a customer was shot and killed early this morning at cruiser's saloon on a street near east is 16th. police say it all started with a fight between two groups of people. one group was kicked out of the bar and then came back 45 minutes later with weapons.

the two groups then went at it again, this time outside the bar, around 1:20 a.m. and during the fight, a gun was fired and the bullet hit a man sitting inside the bar. that man later died. detectives are still looking for the gunman. in just under an hour another day of searching for missing teenager sierra lamar will begin. and today santa clara county deputies will use atv's to expand their search. they plan to focus on a section of the south coyote creek trail in morgan hill and san jose. yesterday more than 750 people signed up to search with the klaas kids foundation. a large grouped focused on the area where on thursday an empty box was found. those items have been sent to the crime lab for analysis. >> we're cautiously hopeful that it's going to -- it's going to help find sierra. it's kind of a bad discovery,

but if it's going to help us find her, that would be good. >> the search has now extended to a 15-mile radius around lamar's home. that's where she last seen two weeks ago. it's been one year since giants fan bryan stow was beaten. earlier this month he was moved to a rehab center where he is undergoing aggressive therapy. two men have been charged in the attack and a pre-trial hearing is scheduled for may. today stowe's family, friends and supporters will mark the anniversary by participating in san jose's walk for thought. organizers hope to raise $50,000 to increase awareness of traumatic brain injuries. in they hours, first lady michelle obama will attend a coast guard ceremony in alameda. she began her bay area visit yesterday at the california academy of sciences in golden

gate park. supporters paid between 5,000 and $7500 to meet the first lady. the state attorney general introduced mrs. obama. and in her speech, she focused on the presidential election. >> when we look at this election, there's going to be a choice of either going back to things the way they've been or of pushing forward, and thanks to the change we first brought for in 2008 and seeing it through. >> about 300 people attended that fund-raiser. and right now security is tight surrounding coast guard island in alameda. police are patrolling the estuary looking out for any suspicious activity. they're also clearing out what is known as anchor outs, unregistered owners living on abandoned boats anchored out in the oakland estuary. >> we want to keep that whole area free from anybody that might cause harm to the first lady. so security is high. >> police say about 20 anchors voluntarily agreed to

temporarily move into empty slips. employees returner rushed to work in a plant following a carbon docks i'd leak. more than 70 workers at -- were sent to hospitals yesterday suffering nausea, headaches and had trouble breathing caused by carbon dioxide gas fumes from a refrigeration unit in the kitchen. the company's owners told ktvu he is not convinced there was a malfunction. his theory was that this was hysteria, a false alarm. >> i do know when people get nervous and there's anxiety, that there could be a chain reaction. >> we don't have 70 some odd people complaining of something, without something happening in there. so we did have some levels in there. so that will be followed up in the investigation. >> fire officials said plant operators had aired out the building by the time they arrived. all of the workers have been released from the hospital. there were also tense moments in vacaville, coming up in 10 minutes the explosion in

styled a shooting range that prompted a emergency response. computer engineers on high alert looking for a possible attack on the internet. last month the group anonymous posted a message called operation global blackout. it calls for attack on the domain name system with junk traffic. today march 31st. the goal, to overwhelm the system. since the message was found, engineers in san francisco began beefing up their defenses saying if there is an attack, most people won't notice anything different. in rare cases people might experience a slower connection. we've been talking about it for 24 hours, and that is rain. and now this morning it's finally here. check in with rosemary, north bay then moving south and. >> exactly. and steady rain through the morning hours, scattered shower for the afternoon. strong southerly winds this morning, gusting to 25 even 30 miles per hour in some cases, a look at storm-tracker 2 where even if it's not raining

outside your door, chances are you've got a pretty good breeze and gusty conditions. sfo reporting 21 miles per hour. we're watching them blow to 30, 35 in some cases. san jose 17 miles per hour. still dry but again it's the north bay that is now seeing this rain as the sun is now up. we've got gray skies overhead. late part, santa rosa, we will continue with this steady rain. it's a quick moving system. it's going to take two to three hours before it passes through. petaluma, novato, san rafael, steady rain at this hour. sausalito, light rain as well. you get there south of the golden gate, and we're mainly dry. watching just a few scattered showers. offshore there is getting ready to move through and we again will be watching over the next few hours. we'll get a break then in the afternoon the scattered showers will be break. livermore reporting southeasterly breeze to 12 miles per hour. 17 in concord with winds gusts continuing and the wind continuing for today as well.

these wind gusts will continue throughout the afternoon, and we're not going to watch them dry down until this evening. so we do have a wind advisory that will start right about 8:00 or so for the carquinez strait and the delta. gusts to 45 miles per hour. and this will continue through the morning hours, strongest winds ahead of the front and with the front, and once it passes through the brose will continue. look at the satellite radar, easy to see the system as it begins to move ashore. we've got the front first, and when the trough moves through we'll have enough unstable air toably in even the possibilities of a thunderstorm for the afternoon. so we're going to get it all today. again the moderate rain over the north bay, it's about 8:00 or so. and it's shifting over san rafael, getting closer to the central bay area. by 9:00, concord, oakland, down into 98, moderate rain, and then by 10:00 it looks like the inner east bay and further

good good morning to you! a lowe look at the rainy, breezy start in san rafael. the storm now onshore moving south over the course of the morning. sever southern california teenagers arrested on suspicion of committing a hate crime and police are looking for three more. the teenagers all african- american from 13 to 16 are accused of attacking a 15-year- old hispanic boy, captured on video and posted on youtube. they say it shows the teenagers knocking the boy to the ground, kicking him in the head, and

knocking out several teeth. last night about 30 people marched through oakland, protesting the shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon martin. some of the demonstrators wore hooded sweatshirt, which have become a tribute to the florida teenager. martin was wearing a hoodie when shot and killed last month by neighborhood watch volunteer george zimmerman hem says it was self-defense. and he has not been charged. christopher lee carlson is now charged with sending threatening letters and including false and misleading information in politics. a grand jury added several counts to an indictment accusing him of mailing about 100 envelopes laced with white powder to members of congress. it was not toxic. carlson is due in court on thursday. new this morning, president obama is calling on congress to pass the buffett rule. that's the legislation that

would raise taxes on americans making more than $1million a year. he made the call in his weekly online video address. >> so every member of congress will go okay record, and if they vote to keep giving tax break to people like me, our country can't ard to, they have to explain to you where that money comes from. >> republicans have called the buffett rule class warfare, and argue the country should not raise taxes on anyone during the economic recovery. also from the white house, president obama has determined there is enough oil on the world market to move ahead with new sanctions against iran. those sanctions call on countries around the world to cut their oil purchases from the middle eastern country, meant to convince iran to abandon its disputed nuclear program and stop israel from undertaking a military strike against iran. you might have to pay more for international flights because of a fight over carbon

emissions. they've placed the aviation industry under the training system because of the air pollution it cause. that means most transatlantic airlines have to pay more with a european airport. industry executives call it a tax. >> i think you'll see the cost of a ticket go much higher, and probably break the price point of where international leisure and business travelers are willing to pay to come to the united states. and that could have a big imact on the economy. >> american a united have sued the eu but dropped the day this week, now urging the obama administration to come up with a solution. good news for the stock market, yesterday closed with one of best first quarters in years. the dow gained 66 points and is up 8% for the first three months of the year. the nasdaq lost 3 points, but is up 19% for the quarter. this is the dow's best first quarter since 1998. same is true for the s&p 500. for the nasdaq, that gain makes it the best first quarter in

more than 20 years. yahoo could begin laying off employees as soon as next week. the company is undergoing a major reorganization as its revenues decline. against competition from rivals like google. those layoffs will not take place all at once. 'ya into's top executives meet this is week to talk about future changes. china's giant manufacturer fox con says it will shorten the work hours of its one million employees. this as an audit says employees often work 60 hours a week. fox con assembles about 40% of the world's electronics that lists products includes the ipad and iphone. keith olbermann is vowing legal action against san francisco's current tv after getting fired. network announced his departure yesterday just a fewer hours before his normal show. he released a statement saying the relationship with olbermann

no longer reflected its values of respect, openness and loyalty. olbermann has a history of clashing with his employers, including espn and nbc. and in a statement, he called out former vice president al gore and his business partner joel hyatt, the founders of the station. he said for now an investigation in an explosion altair vacaville shooting range it. happened yesterday afternoon at a group of target shooters were in one of the indoor ranges when someone noticed smoke from the base of a wall. one person had just told the range master about it when that explosion happened. >> he was getting ready to walk back to the fire extinguisher and put the fire out but it blew out. >> flying shrapnel hit one person in the head. the explosion also damaged the floors and walls of that

business. firefighters in colorado are trying to fully contain a wildfire before the weather begins to work against them. the forecast calls for warmer temperatures and higher winds. crews still need to build more than 3 miles every containment lines. they've contained about 70% of the fire so far. the six square mile wildfire killed two people and rescuers are searching for another suspected victim. at least 25 homes have been damaged or destroyed. we're now learning more about the disappearance of susan powell, the mother of two who went missing in utah several years ago. her husband josh powell, the only suspect in the disappearance, killed himself and their two children in washington state last month. search warrants have now been unsealed and the evidence against josh powell is being revealed. polices say it includes a handwritten note from susan, found in a safe deposit box. >> in the letter she wrote, it should not be shown or given to josh powell under any circumstances.

the letter was titled, last will and testament for susan powell. susan wrote also in this that if she were to die, it may not be an accident, even if it appears to be one. >> other evidence includes blood found in the house, which matched susan's blood, as was two fans set up to dry off a newly washed couch. susan's cell phone was also found in her husband's car but he had removed the system card. police have released a sketch of one of two men wanted in connection with a stabbing across from a caltrain station. take a look halt this sketch. the suspect described as latino. police say he and another person tried to rob a man on alma street monday night and stabbed the victim several timms. 67-year-old victim is recovering and is expected to survive. we're learning more about the man found dead near the bay bridge. as we told you yesterday morning, the body was found near main and harrison streets. he was shot at least once in

the torso. the victim has been identified as 21-year-old deandre young of san francisco. police have not released any suspects information or a motive for the shooting. today middle and high school students are invited to a free summit on bullying. it's held at college on east leeland road in pittsburg and will include workshops, entertainment and speakers. the theme of the event is ways to stop bullying and build character. in 30 minutes, registration opens for fahd's stair climb in san francisco. the event is being held by the american lung association, more than 1200 people will climb all 52 flights of stairs at the old bank of america building on california street. the event is held to raise funds and awareness for the 35 million people who suffer from chronic lung disease. registrations for the event ends at noon. i know some firefighters doing that in full turnout gear, not easy. >> not easy. >> certainly a great cause. >> time now is 7:23.

polices say a shark killed a diver in australia. the victim, a father of two, was diving with his brother about 140 miles south of perth. the department of fishery says it is using an airplane and two government boats to hunt down the shark. this is the fourth deadly shark attack in australia since september. a northern california man is crediting a bear for saving his life. he was hike income butte county when he spotted a mother better and her cub. he watched them for a moment, then turned around and headed down the trail. that's when a mountain lion jumped on his back and knocked

claudine. the wind is an issue now on coast guard island, but the rain is at least stayed away for the event. security is tight as you said. earlier this morning we saw divers in the water doing a security sweep around the coast guard cutter stratten. first lady michelle obama is scheduled to be at the commissioning ceremony for the cutter, starting at 10 this morning. she attended a fund raiser for president obama last night, at the california academy of science. about 300 supporters paid from 500 to dollars 7500 to meet the first lady. you can see it behind me the steps the first lady will come down for the ceremony before addressing the 2500 people expected here on coast guard island. a few people have already arrived for the event. the stratten will be used for drug operations off the coast of central america, near columbia. matt keller, ktvu channel 2 news. three people will share the record-setting $640 million mega-millions jackpot, one

winning ticket came from redbud, illinois. another in baltimore county, maryland. the third in the state of kansas. let's look at the winning numbers. each winning ticket is expected to be worth more than $213 million, before taxes. 29 californians did get the first five numbers right. they earned a cool prize, $130,000 each. the bay area winners bought their tickets at these stores. we stopped by the fast and easy mart this morning in fremont. the owner is excited he sold a winner because now his store

gets 1% of those winnings. that's 1300 dollars he didn't have before. the store sold 20,000 lotto tickets during the days leading up to the drawing. the owner gets 1% of those ticket sales as well. and how about this, nevada doesn't participate in the mega- million lottery, so questions about what thousands of nevada residents it? they crossed the state line to play mega-millions. many of them lined up at the primevally casino resorts lotto store in san bernardino county. the closest place to las vegas that sells those mega-million tickets. more than 1200 people lined up before 9 a.m. yesterday, many waited several hours to buy tickets. we have new video in morning of a fire in downtown oakland just right on the street there. a large group of people many reportedly in cox dated, gathered near telegraph avenue and they started a fire there. this was video around 2:30 in morning. that fire did burn out and the

crowd died down allowing firefighters to move in and extinguish the flame. a shooting in oakland sent a car into a taxi around 6:30 last night in the area of foothill boulevard and coal street. police are not confirming the details. but witnesses say the driver of this car was being chased and shot at by someone in another car. the victim's car hit the taxi, while a woman told us stray bullets hit her house. >> they were a lot of shots and awfully close by. where we fell on the floor, if the bullet had come through from the outside, it would have hit one of us. >> the driver of that car was taken to the hospital. we do not know his condiment the taxi driver was not hurt. the city of oakland is looking to hire more police officers and in order to do that, officials say they'll need to open up another police academy. the oakland tribune reports the city is looking for money to pay for a second academy. police plan to open their first academy in four years in

august. they say they're losing about four officers a month and the second academy will help boost staffing. oakland police has lost 175 officers since late 2008. san francisco mayor ed lee is making indirect comments about sheriff's ross mirkarimi as he attempts to remove him from office. according to the san francisco chronicle, the mayor delivered a keynote address at a conference yesterday on domestic violence. in his speech the mayor said it's important that everyone participates in getting to the ultimate goal because a single instance cannot be tolerated. earlier this month sheriff mirkarimi pled guilty to misdemeanor false in promment after bruising his wife's arm. since then the mayor has suspended him without pay. the board of supervisors will decide if the sheriff's stays or goes. we now know the identities of two girls from the central valley believed to have been killed by the speed freak killers. 19-year-old kimberly billy disappeared in 1984, and 16- year-old joanne hobson vanished

an yough police are investigating a homicide at a bar officers say a customer was shot and killed early this morning at cruiser's saloon on 8th street. police say it all started with a fight between two groups of people. one group was kicked out of the bar and then came back 45 minutes later with weapons. the two groups went at it again, this timeout side the bar about 1:20 in the morning. during that fight a gun was fired and the bullet hit a man sitting inside the bar. that man later died. homicide detectives are still looking for the gunman. another search for a missing teenager sierra lamar volunteers are just now beginning today's effort. allie rasmus is live this morning in morgan hill with how today's search is expanding. >> reporter: this is the headquarters, find sierra center. and there's a line of people filling out the door, who are lining up to volunteer to help in the search for clues for sierra lamar.

they're getting ready to go and out here in the auditorium you can see the people wearing these yellow vests. they're getting ready to head out -- right now to comb through some of the hills and fields and neighborhoods within a 20-mile radius of sierra's home. we also saw 49ers quarterback alex smith here a little earlier this morning. he already went out with a search party, we dried to ask what brought him here and he kind of deflected some of the attention. he said he really didn't want to focus on himself, he just wanted to help out and volunteer with the search. but the klaas kids foundation began the volunteer searches on tuesday of this week to try to find anything that could provide a clue into the disappearance of 16-year-old sierra lamar. she was last seen almost two weeks ago. little more than two weeks ago yesterday. and mark klaas is with the klaas foundation, the president of it. what is the plan for today? you have had a huge turnout who want to help. >> we've had upwards of 2,000 people show it up over the last

four days and just hit the weekend. traditionally the weekend is when people do turn out in large numbers. we are prepared for whatever we get. this place has turned into a well-oiled machine from being an empty vessel just a week ago. we will be able to process a thousand or more people, get them out into the field, give this. viable search locations, and cover huge amounts of ground over the course of today and tomorrow. >> a large group of searchers did go through one of the fields where a couple days ago a box labeled handcuffs, condoms were found are. there plans to go become to that area today? >> i'm not at liberty to talk about the individual search locations. that particular find was done unilaterally, not a team effort. it is an area that had been searched before, but i'm sure it will be searched again given the fact that interesting stuff was found there. >> santa clara county investigators also doing their own searches today, how closely

year-old martin. he says he shot martin in self- defense even though martin was unarmed. the calls for justice for trayvon martin was heard last night in oakland. about 30 people marched through the downtown area, some wearing hoodies in tribute to the teenager. southern california police are looking for three more teenagers they say committed a hate crime seven teenagers, all african-american, between ages 13 and 16, have already been arrested. they are accused of attacking a 15-year-old latino boy. police say they knocked the boy to the ground, kicked him in the head and knocked out several teeth. they say the incident was caught on video and originally posted on youtube. a free summit on bullying is being held today for middle and high school students. it is being held on east leeland road in pittsburg and

2. the latest search effort just got underway about 30 minutes ago. and ktvu's allie rasmus is live now in morgan hill with how the search is expanding. >> reporter: volunteer searches. take a look at the line that goes outside search headquarters. this is 85 fulton road in morgan hill. people started lining up about an hour ago and there's already a line half kay counsel into the parking lot. if we follow this line inside, we can show you where people are signing up and registering folks to go out with some of these search parties. they're all looking for clues in the disappearance of 15-year- old sierra lamar, the teen who disappeared more than two weeks ago. yesterday 750 people volunteered to be part of this search effort. mark klaas, the head of the volunteer search operations, says they're expecting as many as a thousand people to

problem this morning. you can see the chairs are set up. they had problems with flags out there. and you can see the rain is falling on the ground. coming up at 9:15, what the first lady will be doing this morning and who else is expected to attend. . well, happening now, the search for a missing south bay teenager, sierra lamar is continuing today in morgan hill. and today's effort is getting some high profile help. >> reporter: well, today is day five of this volunteer search effort. and it's the first time they are doing it on a weekend. organizers are expecting a lot of people to turn out and help. this is the line behind us of people waiting to register, to be part of these volunteer search teams. you can see a lot of them have their registration forms in hand that they have already filled out waiting in line. some people have walking sticks and backpacks and other equipment. as we go inside, we'll show you the registration tables and everything set up here. they do some training and do a briefing with some of the volunteers before they head out. now, everyone here wants to find

clues in the disappearance of 15-year-old sierra lamar. the morgan hill teen was last seen taking a bus, walking to get to the bus stop to go to school on march 16th. she hasn't been seen since then. yesterday, 750 people volunteered to be part of the search effort. and the goal of these volunteers is to comb through the fields and hills and neighborhoods within a 20-mile radius of sierra's home. mark class, the head of this search operation, quest kids foundation, says they are prepared to give search assignments to as many as 1000 people. among the volunteers we saw here this morning was 49ers quarterback alex smith. he brought water and food for volunteers out here and went out with one of the first search parties. he didn't want to talk on camera. he said he didn't want the focus on him. he just wants to help out. searches have been going on every day since tuesday. this is the first saturday they are doing it. >> we are prepared for whatever we get. this place has turned into a well-oiled machine from being an

empty vessel just a week ago. we will be able to process a thousand or more people, get them out into the field. >> this is our first time volunteering. we work during the week, so we said saturday we would come for sure to help out. you always see the stuff in the news and you want to do something to help, and we finally had the opportunity. >> reporter: now, again, you're looking at the line outside volunteer search headquarters where people are waiting to sign up to help out today. we asked mark klaas how today's weather might affect the search efforts. you can see it's breezy, overcast, but it's not raining yet here in morgan hill. but mark klaas says if the weather does become rough, if the rain starts pouring, they might have to reassign searchers that were going to go near creeks and reservoirs, because he says the volunteer safety is paramount. ktvu, channel 2news from morgan hill. in overnight news, antioch police are investigating a deadly shooting at a bar. officers say a customer was shot and killed early this morning at

cruisers saloon on e street near east 16th. police say it started with a fight between two groups of people. one group was kicked out of the bar, then came back 45 minutes later with weapons. the two groups then went at it again, this time outside the bar, around 1:20 in the morning. during the fight, a gun was fired and the bullet hit a man sitting inside the bar. that man later died. homicide detectives are still looking for the gunman. one year has passed since the brutal beating of giants fan brian stow outside of dodgers stadium. earlier this month, stow was moved to an unnamed rehabilitation center, where he is undergoing aggressive therapy. two men have been charged in the attack. a pretrial hearing is scheduled for may. today, stow's family, friends and supporters will mark the anniversary by participating in san jose's walk for thought. organizers hope to raise $50,000 to increase awareness of traumatic brain injuries. the walk begins at 10:00 a.m.

a live look there at san rafael. rainy, windy, gusty conditions expected through the morning hours. in just about 45 minutes, first lady michelle obama is expected to take the stage in alameda for a coastguard commissioning ceremony. as matt keller tells us, the wet weather is already having an impact this morning. good morning, matt. >> reporter: yeah, good morning. it's been a mess out here, but we just witnessed a motorcade pull up here to the coastguard cutter stratton. you can see some people getting out of some of these cars. we are expecting the first lady, michelle obama here. we also witnessed a significant wind here. the flags on the cutter stratton were blown off into the water before they were pulled out by a couple of workers. the wet and windy weather forced the honor guard to move its performance inside to a nearby warehouse. tents are up and people are huddled under them right now, hoping the rain will stop by the time the first lady arrives for the commissioning ceremony of the coastguard cutter stratton. she is scheduled to speak at the

17-year-old martin. he says he shot martin in self defense, even though martin was unarmed. >> trayvon martin! >> justice for trayvon martin! last night in oakland, protesters marched through downtown area, calling for justice for martin. they wore hoodies, symbolic to the florida teenager. martin was wearing one when he was shot and killed by zimmerman. the body of an iraqi woman found beaten to death in her home near san diego is now back in the middle east. last week, she was found inside her home by her daughter. police say she was beaten with a tire iron and there was a note near her body that said go back to your country. the body arrived in iraq early this morning, just south of baghdad. two police cars escorted her body to the cemetery. right now, computer engineers on high alert, looking out for a possible attack on the internet. last month, a group anonymous posted a message called operation global blackout. they called for anonymous supporters to attack the domain name system with junk traffic

today, march 31st. the goal? to overwhelm the system. since the message was found, engineers, many based in san francisco began beefing up their defenses. they say if there is an attack and the defenses are effective, most people won't notice anything different. in rare cases, people might experience, though, a slower connection. good news for the stock market, as yesterday closes one of the best first quarters in years. the dow industrials gained 66 points yesterday, and is up 8% for the first three months of the year. the nasdaq lost 3 points, but is up 19% for the quarter. this is the dow's best first quarter since 1998. the same is true for the s&p 500. for the nasdaq, that 19% gain makes it the best first quarter in more than 20 years. yahoo! could begin laying off employees as soon as next week. the company is undergoing a major reorganization, as its revenue declines against competition from rivals like google. according to the "wall street journal," the layoffs won't take

& easy mart on arden wood boulevard in fremont. well, hundreds of hopefuls waited in line to buy their tickets from one store in particular. cavanagh's liquor in san lorenzo. that store has a history of delivering big lottery winners. there were still many people in line when the 7:45 p.m. deadline came and went yesterday. and how about these lines? this is from a store near nevada. nevada doesn't participate in the mega millions lottery, so those thousands of nevada residents had to cross the state line to play mega millions. many of them lined up at the prim valley casino resorts lotto store in fernandina county, the closest place to vegas that sells lotto tickets. more than 1200 people lined up before 9:00 a.m. yesterday and waited several hours to buy their tickets. in overnight news, a small fire is set in a downtown oakland street. a group of people, many of them

reportedly intoxicated, gathered near telegraph and 17th street and started the fire around 2:30 this morning. it eventually burned and the crowd died down, allowing firefighters to move in. a car careened into a taxi around 6:30 last night in the area of foot hill boulevard and cole street. police are not confirming the details, but witnesses say the driver of one car was being chased and shot at by someone in another car. the victim's car then hit the taxi. one woman told us stray bullets hit her house. >> there were a lot of shots, awfully close by. as it turns out, where we fell on the floor, if the bullet had come through from the outside, it would have hit one of us. >> the driver of the car was transported to the hospital. we do not know his condition. the taxi driver was not hurt. the city of oakland is looking to hire more police officers. officials say they will need to open another police academy. the oakland tribune reports the

city is looking for money to pay for a second academy. the police department plans to open its first academy in four years this coming august. police say they are losing about four officers a month and the second academy will help boost staffing. oakland pd lost 175 officers just since late 2008. a rave with a notorious past is set for tonight at oracle arena. more than 12,000 people are expected at pop 2012. the event happened two years ago at the cow palace. that's when two men died from taking ecstasy. eight other people became sick and numerous others were arrested on drug charges. the problems led to political backlash and calls for bans on raves at publicly owned facilities. people must be at least 18 years old to attend tonight's event. san francisco mayor ed lee has made an indirect comment about suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi. the chronicle reports the mayor delivered a keynote address at a conference yesterday on domestic violence. in his speech, the mayor said a single instance of domestic

violence cannot be tolerated. earlier this month, sheriff mirkarimi pleaded guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment, after allegedly bruising his wife's arm. since then, the mayor has suspended mirkarimi without pay. the board of supervisors will decide if the sheriff stays or goes. california's high speed rail project support has dropped significantly, down now to $68.4 billion. that may sound like a lot, but that's actually 30 billion less than what was stated in a draft plan released last fall. the new plan will rely on a high speed line from merced to san fernando valley with connections to improve tracks in the bay area and los angeles. storm tracker working overtime this morning, coming down pretty good at times. the north bay seeing light rain by sunrise this morning, the front was here.

outside dodgers stadium. stow's family and friends will mark the anniversary by participating in san jose's walk for thought to raise money and awareness for traumatic brain injuries. and there are three tickets that matched all of the numbers in last night's record $640 million mega millions drawing. they were sold in maryland, illinois, and kansas. there were five tickets sold in the bay area that matched five numbers, netting ticket holders $130,000 each. in just about 15 minutes, first lady michelle obama is expected in alameda to take part in a coastguard commissioning ceremony. as matt keller tells us, today's ceremony is the second stop on the first lady's bay area tour. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, claudine. the race started here on coastguard island just before 8:00. as you look now here, these people are braving the rain and they have the best seats in the house. only problem is, they don't have tents. the weather had gotten so bad, organizers have now set up a video feed in a nearby building

so people can watch and still stay dry. about half hour ago, a motorcade pulled up to the site of the cutter stratton. first lady michelle obama is scheduled to be on the stage for the commissioning ceremony, which starts in just about 15 minutes. coastguard cutter stratton is named after dorothy strattton. she served during world war ii and was the first woman in history to serve as a coastguard commissioned officer. >> we consider her a legend. and this is what the new cutters are named after. they are called the legend class. >> reporter: the cutter stratton will have several missions, including drug operations off the coast of central america. we're told the event is still on schedule and should start in about 15 minutes, at 10:00 this morning, and people are eagerly anticipating that and of course afterwards getting out of the rain. matt keller, channel 2news. security is tight surrounding coastguard island in alameda. oakland police officers are patrolling the estuary, looking out for suspicious activity.

they are also clearing out what's known as anchor-outs, unregistered boaters out in the oakland estuary. we now know the identities of two girls from the central valley believed to be killed by the speed freak killers. kimberly billy disappeared in 1984 and joanne hobson in 1985. their remains were found in an abandoned well in stockton. police were led there by convicted killer shermantine. >> he did the right thing by giving the information for these families, to give closure, but he needs to continue to do the right thing and tell the rest

for everybody else. >> police say so far, they have identified four out of five sets of remains that shermantine directed them to. only on -- searchers dug out the bodies of six people, but two others remained buried. finally, anna conrad was found, conscious and talking. rita williams was the only one allowed to interview conrad when she arrived at that hospital 30 years ago. >> did you ever give up hope? >> no. i knew they would be there. i was praying today. i knew they would come in. >> doctors amputated her right leg below the knee and all the toes on her left foot because of frost buy. the last person was found after conrad, but he did not survive that avalanche. today, conrad is married with children and she still skis and works at mammoth mountain. and stay with ktvu tonight

firing just before his normal 8:00 p.m. show, releasing a statement its relationship with olbermann no longer reflected its values of respect, openness and loyalty. olbermann has a history of clashing with employers, including espn and nbc. in a statement, olbermann called out former vice president al gore and his business partner joel hyatt, the founders of current. olbermann said, quote, for now, it is important only to, again, acknowledge that joining them was a sincere and well-intentioned gesture on my part, but in retrospect, a foolish one. a new documentary about bullying in american schools is now in theaters, but some theaters won't show it because it's not rated. filmmakers decided to release the film without a rating rather than take out some of the offensive language in that film. the other option was an r rating, but that would mean children under 17 could not see the film without an adult. participants featured in this project hope the film gets

benders and spin-outs this morning. so please be careful if you are headed out there. want to show you new video of the wet weather around the bay area this morning. shot just a few minutes ago in downtown oakland and chinatown. everyone got those umbrellas out. it is expected to be a wet morning for most of the bay area before it clears up, sort of, early this afternoon. we do have more rain in the forecast for early next week. and around the world yacht race has made it to the bay area. it started last august in the united kingdom. there are 10 boats taking part. the leader is gold coast australia, which sailed into jack london square last night. a cheering crowd, including mayor jean quan was there to greet the crew. there are two more legs in the race. it finishes back in the u uk where it started. self-described nerds are taking over one block in palo alto today. the superhappy block part hack a-thon brings together software developers, artists and local government leaders. organizers hope participants will draw inspiration from each
